Katie Cowell’s first round in the British shotgun series this year got off to a rocky start amidst blustery conditions but clawed it back with determination!

Olympic Trap is a challenging shotgun shooting event featured in the Olympic Games and governed by the International Shooting Sport Federation. As one of the most difficult trap shooting disciplines, Olympic Trap demands marksmanship and stamina from its competitors. Shooters must hit airborne clay targets launched from 15 traps situated in front of 5 different shooting stations. This tests a shooter’s reflexes and hand and eye co-ordination.

With the wind gusting strongly on day one, Katie struggled to find her rhythm and accuracy, ending the first day of competition towards the bottom of the leaderboard.

Not one to give up easily, Katie gritted her teeth and bore down for the second day of competition. She focused intently, making subtle adjustments to her technique to account for the wind. Her perseverance paid off, and she clawed her way up the standings with an impressive performance to qualify for the finals in 6th position. Only the top 6 women would compete for the medals. The finals featured the top 6 women Olympic Trap shooters in Britain, an impressive field of past Olympians, Commonwealth Games medalists and current members of the GB squad.

Katie started strong in the final, hitting the first few targets cleanly. But Olympian Kirsty Hegarty and current national team members Ellie Steward and Abbey Ling proved too strong, claiming the top three spots on the podium. While Katie was disappointed to finish just off the podium with 4th place after her valiant comeback, she gained valuable experience competing against Britain’s elite trap shooters. With more composure honed from this pressure-packed final, Katie now knows what it will take to beat these rivals next time. Her grit and determination suggest she will be a force for years to come in British Olympic Trap shooting. Katie is so grateful for the sponsorship she receives from Lothbury UK Ltd. Their support alleviates the financial pressures and allows Katie to focus her energy on performing at her peak. To be continued …
